"Without a doubt I would have to say that the
Grand Theatre Academy
gave me the self confidence and belief that is
essential for every
actor when they are starting out...without this I
most certainly
would not have been able to realise my ambition
of being a professional actor."

The Grand Theatre Academy is about to launch its
biggest season of work this September as all of its four groups return
after their summer recess. Auditions will take place on Sunday 10
September and are free to anyone aged between 11-14 years old, as the
academy embarks upon its most challenging season yet.
"This is going to be a big year for us!" explains Paul David-Gough
(Academy Director). "As well as increasing the number of places
available to young people in the Junior Academy, we are looking to
really establish our other groups with some demanding performance
pieces. We've also lined up some great artists to direct projects with
all of the Academy groups".
Anyone interested in attending the auditions the Grand Theatre
Academy should contact Paul directly on 07951 769847, to book their
place.
"We're not asking people to prepare audition speeches, or to come along
and entertain us. The auditions take the place of a workshop and we'll
be assessing people's abilities to work with and co-operate with others
over the course of a couple of hours. It also provides the young people
with an opportunity to sample the type of work which we do and decide if
it's the type of thing that they'd be interested in doing."
Previous experience is not necessarily essential for people wishing to
try out for the Academy, as the emphasis is not on what you know, but
what you are prepared to learn and it has already proved a winning
formula over the past few years.
"Although we do help a number of young people to develop and progress to
furthering their studies at Drama College, we also have a number of
young people who have already made other choices relating to their
careers, but wish to develop confidence and social skills. It is also a
good place to meet new friends and spend some time with people who share
common interests."
Since January this year the Academy's groups have produced one main
house production of The Little Mermaid, as well as five studio
productions:
Facing Fear (February 2006)
The Under-grounders (May 2006)
Teechers (June 2006)
Friends Re-United and Under Pressure (Both
July 2006)
After spending much of the summer dressed in chain mail, playing King
Arthur in Feelgood Theatre's production of Arthur King of the Britons,
Paul has also spent a lot of time reading a number of other plays.
"Choosing the right pieces is important. It would be quite easy to
announce that we were doing this play or that one, but much of what we
do here is about developing the performance skills of the academy
members. So choosing pieces which are challenging has to be balanced
with the skill level of the group members.. This then informs how we
begin the first term, knowing which skills are important to begin
developing".
