The Grand
Theatre is an 1100-seat theatre designed by
Frank Matcham in 1894. This amazing space is a wonder
of restoration and revival, presenting a full range of every performing
artform, as Blackpool's community theatre, Lancashire's preferred opera

Variety grows more popular day by day. In Blackpool the
cry for
first-class Variety is constantly to the forefront, and the public are
clamouring for the latest turns, as well as for return visits from old
favourites... Each week there is
something fresh, something new.
- Blackpool Times, 1 April 1930
The action of the theatre, though modern states esteem it merely
ludicrous unless it be satirical and biting, was carefully watched by
the ancients, so that it might improve mankind by virtue; and indeed
many wise men and great philosophers have thought it to the mind as the
bow to the fiddle; and certain it is, though a great secret in nature,
that the minds of men in company are more open to affections and
impressions than when alone.
- Francis Bacon, The Advancement of
Learning, 1605.
The purpose of playing, whose end, both at first and now, was and is, to
hold as 'twere the mirror up to nature, to show virtue her own feature,
scorn her own image, and the very age and body of the time his form and
pressure.
- William Shakespeare, Hamlet, 1603,
Act III, Scene Two.
The theatre is one of the most useful and expressive implements in a
country's moral upbringing: it is a barometer that marks its greatness
or decline. A theatre that is sensitive and well balanced in every
branch, from tragedy to light comedies, can, within the space of a few
years, change the sensitivity of the people. A theatre's deepest essence
springs from its organisation.
- Federico Garcia Lorca, 1935
The people will have the theatre; then make it a good one ……. The
theatre is irresistible: organise the theatre!
- Matthew Arnold, 1891
