"Without a doubt I would have to say that the
Grand Theatre Academy
gave me the self confidence and belief that is
essential for every
actor when they are starting out...without this I
most certainly
would not have been able to realise my ambition
of being a professional actor."

How much previous experience do I need?
Previous acting experience is not essential; however we do expect
prospective students to have an interest in acting and a desire to work
hard.
What if I don't enjoy it?
In most cases people attend an open audition to sample the work,
prior to committing to join the academy, however, in some cases, we do
invite people to attend additional sessions until they are satisfied
that the work is suitable for them.
Will I be able to get TV work?
This year we will be launching a new facility which allows CV's for
all academy members to be placed on the academy website. This
information will then be circulated to all casting directors and will
allow visiting companies to see the range of performers that we have in
the academy. In the past, the academy has been represented in a number
of visiting touring productions, giving members a taste of life in the
professional theatre. We are not operating as an agency and will not
negotiate fees on your behalf. Neither will we take any form of
commission for such work. All arrangements between visiting companies or
TV companies will depend on negotiation between the two parties and
parents/guardians of the Academy member, not the Grand Theatre or the
Grand Theatre Academy. There will be no charge for this facility, as
this service is free to all academy members, wishing to participate in
this scheme, who have written parental consent, where applicable.
What if I can't afford the fees?
The theatre pays for a limited number of assisted places each year.
The theatre covers, in most cases half of the cost of subscription fees
each term. These assisted places are offered on an annual basis, usually
in September, although some places are offered later in the academic
year.
Where is the Grand Theatre?
The Grand Theatre is situated on Church Street in Blackpool, next to
Marks and Spencers.

What plays do you do?
The Academy chooses plays, which are suitable for the size of the
membership and the target audience in each case. Part of the policy of
the Grand Theatre Academy states, that the Academy should attract new
audiences to the theatre. The target audience for the Academy is
predominantly young people of a similar age to those in each of the
three age groups.
Do you do musicals?
We have done productions with some songs and dance routines in the
past, but we will not be presenting fully blown musicals. The emphasis
is mainly on producing quality drama, which shows off the acting ability
of the members.
Do you have one-off workshops, as opposed to full membership?
The theatre also runs an on-going program of theatre related
activities, called the Lawrence House Theatre Skills Program. These
activities are led by leading professional practitioners and run during
the school holidays. You do not need to subscribe to any type of special
membership for these workshops, but you can pay to attend these
workshops. Information regarding these workshops can be found on the
theatres main website and in the theatres seasonal brochures. We also
forward information to all schools within a 90minute drive time.
What should I do now if I want to join?
If you are aged 11-16 years old, you need the consent of your
parent/primary carer, before contacting us. We need to ensure that all
prospective Academy members are participating in sessions with the full
approval of their legal guardian. To contact us click here to go to the
contact us page.
